A former Commissioner for Works in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen, has leveled serious allegations against MTN Nigeria, accusing the telecom giant of collaborating with unknown individuals to sabotage members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
According to Mr. Inyang, who defected from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the APC in February 2024, MTN allegedly configured the mobile phones of former YPP members now in the APC to play YPP-themed ringtones without their consent or option to remove them. Mr. Inyangeyen expressed his frustration on Facebook, stating, “MTN has collaborated with some unscrupulous elements to blackmail us in APC… It’s a shame to patronize your network.”
The claim has sparked intense debate online, with some calling for a formal investigation into the matter. Others, however, have questioned the technical feasibility of such an action, leaving many to wonder about the validity of the accusations.
As of now, MTN Nigeria has not issued a public response to the allegations. The lack of response has further fueled the speculation and debate surrounding the claim.
This incident comes against the backdrop of complex political dynamics in Akwa Ibom State.
It remains to be seen how this situation unfolds and whether MTN Nigeria will respond to the allegations. One thing is certain, however: the accusation has sparked a heated discussion about the role of telecom companies in politics and their potential impact on users.
