Akwa Ibom Gov’s Aide; Thomas Thomas set to bury father

 

Thomas Thomas, PhD, Personal Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Local Media and son of the late Elder Effiong Thomas Udom, has announced funeral arrangements for his father, who passed on at the age of 87.

Elder Effiong Thomas Udom, the longest-serving Elder of The Apostolic Church Nigeria, died peacefully on Saturday, 19th July, 2025, after a life of devoted Christian service and community leadership. Ordained in 1961, he served the church faithfully for over six decades, earning widespread respect for his discipline, humility, and unwavering commitment to the Christian faith.

Beyond the church, the late Elder Udom was a respected farmer, trader, and community leader whose influence extended across Western Calabar and Akwa Ibom State. Family sources described him as a loving but firm father whose life of integrity and service left a lasting imprint on his family and community.

In a statement issued by Thomas Thomas, who is the Chief Mourner, funeral activities will commence on Monday, 16th February, 2026, with the opening of the mourning house at the deceased’s residence in Otung Otong, Obotim Ikot Ekong, Nsit Ibom LGA.

The statement further disclosed that a singsong and choir night involving various church choirs will hold on Wednesday, 18th February, 2026, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, while a friends’ night is scheduled for Thursday, 19th February, 2026, from 10:00pm till dawn, all at the deceased compound.

According to the release, lying-in-state will take place by 9:00am on Friday, 20th February, 2026, followed by the funeral service at 10:00am. The service will be conducted by The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Creek Town Field, Cross River State Territory, in collaboration with The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Mbioto Area, Etinan Field, Akwa Ibom State Territory.

The burial ceremony will take place at the deceased’s residence in Otung Otong, Obotim Ikot Ekong, where family members, church leaders, friends, and well-wishers are expected to gather to honour the life and legacy of the late Elder Effiong Thomas Udom.

The family has extended an open invitation to the general public to attend the funeral rites and celebrate the life of a man remembered for faith, service, and humility.
