INEC acknowledges, as Nenadi Usman-led LP fixes congresses, convention

The Labour Party has set new dates for its congresses and national convention. According to the party’s National Leadership, the events will kick off with Ward congresses on April 23, 2026, followed by Local Government Area congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25.

A statement jointly signed by the Caretaker National Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman and National Caretaker Secretary, Sen Darlington Nwokocha, also showed that the national convention is scheduled to take place on April 28, 2026, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State.

Parts of the Labour Party’s statement read “We write to formally notify the Commission of the approved schedule for the activities for the Labour Party 2026 Ward, Local Government Area (LGA), and state congresses, as well as the National Convention.

This notification is made pursuant to the provisions of sections 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, (as amended), the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, and Section 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which mandate political parties to duly inform the Commission of their congresses, convention, and meetings”.

It could be recalled that the party had last month postponed its earlier fixed congresses.

In the statement, the LP national leadership also informed INEC that its decision to reschedule the events was made to allow for broader participation, particularly to complete the ongoing digital membership registration process.

The party has also assured the commission of its commitment to transparent and credible internal processes.

It could also be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission had fully recognized Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership of the Labour Party (LP), following a Federal High Court judgment.

The court had ruled that Usman’s National Caretaker Committee is the valid leadership of the party, pending a national convention. This decision comes after a prolonged leadership crisis in the party, with Julius Abure contesting Usman’s leadership.

The court relied on a Supreme Court verdict from April 4, 2025, which upheld Usman’s leadership.
