2027: Wike loses, as APC moves to make Fubara consensus guber candidate
Agency Report
If the information filtering from the confines of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers state is anything to go by, then the immediate-past governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike may be losing out in his bid to stop his erstwhile political godson and successor, Governor Sim Fubara from being reelected.
Recall that following his reinstatement as governor of the oil-rich State after his six months suspension, Sir Fubara had defected from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the platform upon which he was elected as governor in 2023.
Fubara who served as Accountant-General under Wike’s administration was anointed by his boss as successor, and reportedly did everything possible to see him elected.
Problems started when both leaders had disagreements regarding most political decisions in the state. The problems snowballed into threats and actual moves of impeachment of Governor Fubara by the Rivers state House of Assembly.
Upon intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which led to Fubara’s six months suspension, the governor on his return, defected to the APC.
Wike has vowed to ensure that Fubara does not return as governor in 2027.
But according to media reports from reliable source: “Information at my disposal has it that the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara is set to be unveiled as the consensus candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, ahead of the 2027 governorship polls, leaving the PDP as the only option for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to stage a fight for the Brick House.
“Our intelligence gathering indicates that the former Rivers Governor is reportedly anointing House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda (Obio/Akpor) as his preferred candidate to wrestle the governorship seat in 2027 on the platform of the PDP”.
Efforts to get the leadership of the APC in Rivers state to comment on the issue were unsuccessful as at press time.
