The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, has fixed Saturday, August 28, 2027 for the conduct of Local Government General Elections across the 31 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Commission announced this in a formal Notice of Election dated Friday, October 30, 2026, and signed by the Secretary of the Commission.

According to the notice, the election will be for the positions of Chairmen and Councillors into all 31 Local Government Councils in Akwa Ibom State.

AKISIEC stated that the election is being conducted pursuant to the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2026 and the Electoral Act, 2026.

AKISIEC said: “Pursuant to Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2026 and the Electoral Act, 2026, NOTICE is hereby given that Local Government General Elections shall be held on Saturday, 28th August, 2027 for the Elections of Chairmen and Councillors into all 31 Local Government Councils in Akwa Ibom State. Nomination papers shall be delivered at the Commission’s Headquarters, 5 Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo.”

The Commission further directed that the notice be published in all the 31 Local Government Councils and 369 Ward Headquarters across the state to ensure wide publicity and compliance.

It also added that run-off elections, if any, shall be held seven days after the main elections or soon thereafter.

The publication of the notice effectively kickstarts the timetable for political activities ahead of the 2027 local government polls in the state.

Stakeholders, including political parties, aspirants and civil society organizations, are expected to begin preparations for the contest, including the purchase and submission of nomination forms at AKISIEC headquarters in Uyo.

The August 2027 date means the local government elections will come six months after the general elections scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for January and February 2027. Presidential and National Assembly elections are fixed for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.

Analysts say the AKISIEC timetable gives political parties enough breathing space to conclude their national and state contests before shifting focus to the grassroots.

Akwa Ibom, with 31 LGAs and 369 wards, is one of the states where local government elections are keenly contested as a platform for political consolidation at the grassroots.

The last local government election in the state was conducted in 2024, and the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors is expected to lapse in late 2027, making the August date consistent with constitutional requirements for transition at the third tier of government.

AKISIEC has in recent years been rated among the more active state electoral commissions, and its reliance on both its enabling state law 2026 and the Electoral Act 2026 is seen as an effort to align its processes with national electoral standards, including voter register integrity and party primaries.

Political parties in the state are now expected to await the detailed timetable and guidelines, which will include dates for party primaries, submission of nomination papers, verification of candidates, campaigns and publication of final lists of candidates.

As of the time of this report, no political party in the state has officially reacted to the notice, but party chieftains contacted said they will study the notice and prepare accordingly.
