Abak State Constituency 2027: Ibagwa people endorse LP Candidate, Dr Ekong

…as Labour Party intensifies mobilization

By Ime Silas

Politics, at its best, was on full display in Ibagwa community on Monday as 2027 Labour Party House of Assembly hopeful for Abak State Constituency, Nsisong Ekong, PhD, FERIN received a rousing welcome that turned a scheduled strategic consultation into what party leaders described as a “celebration of shared hope.”

The visit, which drew a massive turnout of unit leaders, youth leaders, and key community stakeholders, has been interpreted by observers as an early signal of grassroots momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The atmosphere in Ibagwa was thick with anticipation hours before Dr. Ekong and his delegation arrived. By the time the candidate stepped into the historic community, the gathering had swelled beyond expectations.

Party officials said the crowd was not driven by curiosity alone, but by a deliberate message of solidarity and acceptance.

“In a political landscape that often feels distant, the turnout underscored a powerful truth: leadership belongs to the community,” a statement from the NsisongIkanAbasi Campaign Organization noted.

“The warmth of the reception was a testament to Nsisong Ekong’s growing acceptance as a candidate who doesn’t just stand above the people, but walks beside them.”

The significance of the visit was further underlined by the caliber of those who accompanied the House of Assembly hopeful.

Elder Unwana Isaiah, the Labour Party State Secretary, was present to signal the party’s institutional backing for the Abak constituency movement. He was joined by Barr. Martin Ukpe, Legal Adviser for the NsisongikanAbasi Campaign Organisation, and Mr. Fioyo Umoren, Secretary General of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Alumni Association.

According to the campaign team, the presence of both political structure and academic leadership was intentional — a reflection of the movement’s bid to combine grassroots mobilization with intellectual direction.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ekong shifted the tone from celebration to reflection. Rather than reel out the familiar campaign promises, he framed the 2027 election as a defining moment for governance in Abak.

He did not offer “the standard, hollow promises that tire the ears of voters,” the campaign statement said. Instead, his address focused on what he termed “the true essence of governance.”

“True governance is a partnership,” Dr. Ekong told the crowd. “It requires strategic connection, genuine commitment to the grassroots, and an open door that ensures the smallest unit in Ibagwa has a say in the affairs of the constituency.”

The candidate emphasized that 2027 is “not just about winning an election” but about “establishing meaningful leadership — the kind that heals divisions and builds bridges.”

His message of “hope and restoration” resonated with community leaders, who responded with pledges of support.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the leader expressed profound gratitude to the delegation and assured them of Ibagwa’s “undying support throughout the electioneering process and beyond.”

He added that politics does not have to be loud to be powerful. “Sometimes, it is found in the quiet resolve of a community deciding to lift up one of their own,” he said, to loud applause.

Political analysts in Abak note that the Ibagwa engagement fits into a broader pattern by the Labour Party to deepen its roots at the constituency level ahead of 2027. With the party seeking to expand its footprint beyond its 2023 breakthrough, town hall-style consultations like Monday’s are expected to become more frequent across the state.

For Dr. Ekong, a scholar and public affairs commentator, the Ibagwa reception represents both validation and responsibility. Campaign officials say the NsisongikanAbasi 2027 movement is built on three pillars: grassroots inclusion, strategic policy engagement, and community-driven development.

The convergence of party leadership, legal expertise, and alumni network in one delegation was also seen as a deliberate effort to present the Abak race as one that transcends partisan noise.

“With the unyielding solidarity shown by Ibagwa’s leadership and the formidable team driving the NsisongikanAbasi 2027 movement, the path ahead for Abak State Constituency looks not only promising, but beautifully clear,” the campaign organization stated.

As the 2027 election cycle draws closer, yesterday’s event in Ibagwa may well be remembered as an early marker of how the Labour Party intends to prosecute its campaign in Abak — not through the noise of the campaign trail, but through direct engagement, listening, and what Dr. Ekong called “the quiet assurance” that people’s voices matter.

The campaign team said similar consultations will continue across other units and communities in Abak State Constituency in the coming weeks.
