Governor Umo Eno, yesterday, unveiled a comprehensive development blueprint for the reclaimed Uyo Village Road corridor, aimed at transforming the former dump-site into a strategic urban growth hub.
The initiative is designed to address housing deficits, tackle erosion challenges, stimulate economic activities, and optimize the use of reclaimed land located close to the Uyo city centre.
In line with the State’s long-term urban development policy, the project will open new development corridors and create opportunities for sustainable residential, creative, and economic development.
Outlined below are the Governor’s key intervention plans:
1. Construction of a dual carriageway from the Calabar–Itu Highway to Wellington Bassey Way, including two bridges.
2. Establishment of a modern Government Residential Area (GRA) within the reclaimed Uyo Village Road axis.
3. Construction of approximately 150 middle-income housing units to mitigate housing deficits in the State.
4. Development of a Creative Village to promote film making, other arts, culture, and the creative economy.
5. Development of a structured housing estate as part of the broader residential master plan.
6. Installation of comprehensive drainage and water channel systems to address erosion and flooding challenges.
7. Stabilization and transformation of the ravine-prone terrain through land reclamation and sand-filling for sustainable development.
8. Opening of new development corridors for housing, agriculture, and creative industries within close proximity to the Uyo metropolis.
9. Construction of spur and internal access roads to ensure seamless connectivity between the GRA, Creative Village, and adjoining areas like the Arise Palm Resort.
10. Strategic deployment of reclaimed land near the Uyo city centre in line with the State’s long-term urban development policy.
11. Creation of employment opportunities for youths and local workers through project execution and associated economic activities.
Collectively, these interventions underscore Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to deliberate urban renewal, inclusive growth, and people-centered development.
The Uyo Village Road project is poised to redefine the city’s landscape, unlock economic potential, and improve the quality of life for residents, while setting a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure development in Akwa Ibom State.
