A High Court sitting in Uyo has declared that the arrest of a traditional worshipper, Mr. David Effiong, in Akwa Ibom State was unlawful.
In his ruling, the judge ordered his immediate and unconditional release, including the release of the person behind the Ekpo mask.
The court further directed the Akwa Ibom State Government to pay damages to Mr. David Effiong for the violation of his fundamental human rights, including his freedom of worship.
Recall that Mr David Effiong was arrested by the men of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Police Force with mask of Ekpo masquerade in the state.
The state governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, PhD, had last week issued a directive banning the operation of Ekpo Masquerade in the state.
