In response to growing security challenges in the Kwara South Senatorial District, all Kara (cattle) markets across the seven local government areas have been ordered to shut down with immediate effect.
The decision, announced by the Forum of Local Government Chairmen in the District, takes effect from Friday, September 19, 2025, and will remain in force until further notice. Other produce markets have also been directed to close by 6:00 p.m. on market days.
Just Event Online TV reports, According to the Chairmen, the move followed extensive stakeholder engagements and security reviews aimed at consolidating ongoing operations against criminal elements in the region.
“This painful but necessary decision was reached after careful consideration of the prevailing security realities. While invading criminals have been decimated in recent weeks, military and hybrid operatives are still carrying out cleanup operations,” the statement read.
The council leaders stressed that the measure was proactive, designed to strengthen security architecture, protect lives and properties, and ensure the safety of residents, traders, and commuters.
They further assured that the closure would be periodically reviewed and reversed once a conducive environment for business activities is guaranteed.
“We are mindful of the economic implications on our people, but we must prioritize the safety of lives and properties over short-term inconveniences. Residents should remain calm and cooperate with government and security agencies as we work towards restoring lasting peace,” the Chairmen added.
