Former governor of Anambra state, His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano has debunked the rumours of his death, saying he’s alive, hale and hearty.
It could be recalled that a section of the media has been awash with rumours of the former governor’s death at a London hospital purportedly of cancer-related ailment.
Responding, the Akpokuedike decried what he described as spreading of falsehood but appreciated everyone who reached out to him through calls and messages.
According to Chief Obiano “My beloved Ndi Anambra, friends, and well-wishers,
I woke to hear of a rumour making the rounds about my wellbeing.
Let me assure you personally: I am alive, hale, hearty, and in excellent health.
By the special grace of God, I am doing very well. It is unfortunate that some individuals still find joy in spreading falsehood simply for reasons yet to be established. But we will continue to rise above such mischief”.
Calling on everyone to disregard the rumour, Obiano continued “To everyone who reached out with calls, messages, and prayers, I sincerely appreciate your concern. Your love and goodwill mean more than words can express.
Please disregard the rumour entirely.
We remain focused, grateful, and guided by God’s grace”.
Obiano was the fourth elected Governor of Anambra State who served from March 17, 2014, to March 17, 2022. During his tenure, he focused on infrastructural development, security enhancement, and agricultural promotion. He was re-elected for a second term in 2017.
Before his entrance into full time politics, Obiano had a successful banking career, working with First Bank of Nigeria as well as Fidelity Bank Nigeria, where he rose to the position of Executive Director in 2003.
It would be recalled that Obiano faced allegations of financial impropriety and was arrested by Nigeria’s antigraft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2022. He was charged with misappropriating over N4 billion from the state’s treasury and his trial is ongoing.
His legacy includes significant infrastructure developments and efforts to improve security in Anambra State.
