ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CONDEMNS ALLEGED DISCRIMINATION AGAINST IBIBIO LANGUAGE GRADUATES IN AKWA IBOM CIVIL SERVICE RECRUITMENT
The University of Uyo Alumni Association has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the reported maltreatment and exclusion of three graduates of Ibibio Language from the University of Uyo during a recent civil service recruitment interview in Akwa Ibom State.

According to credible reports, the affected alumni, who had successfully completed all stages of the recruitment process, including registration via the ARISE portal and passing the requisite e-examinations, were allegedly denied the opportunity to participate in the final interview at the Civil Service Auditorium, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, Uyo. Their disqualification was reportedly based solely on their academic background in Ibibio Language.
The Association finds these allegations deeply troubling, particularly claims that the candidates were subjected to disparaging remarks and public ridicule by members of the interview panel. If verified, such conduct represents not only a breach of professional ethics but also a serious affront to the dignity of our graduates and the integrity of the recruitment process.
Ibibio Language, as an academic discipline, is a vital component of our cultural and intellectual heritage. It equips graduates with competencies in linguistics, communication, translation, and cultural mediationāskills that are indispensable in effective public administration, especially in a state where indigenous language remains central to grassroots engagement.
The exclusion of qualified candidates on the basis of their field of study is not only unjust but counterproductive to the goals of inclusive governance and efficient service delivery. Public institutions must reflect the diversity and realities of the society they serve, and indigenous knowledge systems must be accorded the respect they deserve.
The Alumni Association wishes to commend the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, for his administrationās commitment to inclusive and merit-based recruitment through the ARISE initiative. His encouragement of graduates from diverse academic backgrounds, including indigenous language studies, is both progressive and commendable.
However, the Association is concerned that the alleged actions of certain officials may undermine these laudable efforts. We therefore call for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, with a view to ensuring accountability and preventing a recurrence.
Furthermore, we urge all stakeholders involved in the recruitment process to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and respect for all candidates, irrespective of their academic discipline.
The University of Uyo Alumni Association remains committed to defending the dignity of its members and promoting excellence in all fields of study.
