…warn political parties, support groups, thugs

As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has issued a firm directive that no political rally, procession, campaign, or large public gathering will be allowed in the state without prior notification to the Police.
In a press release signed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, and made available on Monday, August 31, 2026, the Command said the policy is aimed at preventing clashes, managing traffic, and ensuring the safety of participants and residents.
CP Azare reminded all political parties, support groups, associations, and other organised bodies that they must formally notify the Police Command “well ahead” of any planned political activity within Akwa Ibom.
“The essence of this directive is primarily to prevent clashes between political parties or groups whose activities may inadvertently be scheduled for the same venue, route, date or time, as well as to enable the Police make adequate security arrangements, manage traffic and protect participants and members of the public,” the statement read.
According to the Command, organisers are expected to provide clear details in their notification, including the date, time, venue, expected number of participants, and proposed routes where applicable. The information, the Police said, will allow for proper coordination with other security agencies and relevant authorities.
The Commissioner stressed that the requirement is not intended to frustrate or block lawful political activities, but to guarantee that the rights of one group do not infringe on the rights and safety of others.
“The measure is not designed to prevent or frustrate lawful political activities, but to ensure that the rights of one political party or group do not interfere with the rights, safety and activities of others,” CP Azare emphasized.
He further assured that the Police Command remains committed to impartiality and will provide a level playing field for all political parties and groups, irrespective of affiliation, as the state prepares for the 2027 polls.
However, the Command drew a hard line against violence and disorder. CP Azare strongly warned political thugs, troublemakers, and individuals who may seek to exploit political gatherings to cause unrest to desist immediately.
The Police said it will take “firm and lawful action” against anyone found fomenting trouble, engaging in thuggery, carrying offensive weapons, intimidating opponents, destroying property, unlawfully blocking public roads, or provoking rival groups.
“Any act capable of causing a breakdown of law and order will be met with decisive response,” the release warned.
To enforce the directive, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders across the 31 local government areas have been ordered to intensify intelligence gathering and maintain adequate security around political activities and other public gatherings.
The Command also called on political leaders to caution their supporters and demonstrate responsibility by ensuring that all activities are peaceful and properly coordinated with security authorities.
“Akwa Ibom State belongs to all of us. Political differences must never be allowed to threaten the peace and security of the State,” CP Azare stated, adding that the cooperation of political parties, support groups and the general public is “highly solicited.”
The Police said members of the public who notice suspicious activities around political gatherings should report promptly to the nearest police station.
