P/Harcourt landlord arrested, risks jail for false allegation against tenants, forgery

…police Inspector indicted

By our correspondent

A landlord in Port Harcourt, Mr. Emmanuel David Edem, has been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force, Rivers State Command for allegedly giving false information to the police against his tenants.

The aggrieved tenants, Emmanuel Obari and Mfonobong Inyang who have petitioned the police separately and jointly, seeking thorough investigation, have also indicted a police officer, Inspector Amadi, for his role in the saga.

Our Correspondent who monitored the incident reported that the said landlord was arrested on Sunday, October 5, 2025, after he failed to honour several police invitations extended to him following the petition against him.

According to multiple police sources who craved anonymity, the landlord had falsely accused the affected tenants of stealing his power generating set and an inverter battery.

Parts of the petition as sighted by our correspondent read: “It is with grave urgency that I humbly write you on all of the above. The matter started on 12th day of November, 2024, when Inspector Amadi and my landlord, Mr. Emmanuel David Edem, conspired among themselves and gave me and my neighbour a false accusation and wrongful detention at police station that both of us stole our landlord’s new generating set and inverter battery.

They maliciously alleged that I and my neighbour stole his new generator and inverter battery on the 1st of November, 2024 at 6:00 am. He brought his security man and his brother, Mr. Daniel to bear false witness against us to this allegation at the police station.

As a result of this baseless allegation, I was arrested at about 6:15 am and unlawfully detained at Okporo Police Station on 12th day of November, 2024 and collected bail of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000.00) despite complete lack of credible evidence linking me to any theft”.

Parts of the reliefs sought by the petitioners include “A thorough investigation into the incident and the motive behind the false accusation.

That the accuser, Mr. Emmanuel David Edem, be prosecuted for false information under section 125 of the Criminal Code Act, and for defamation.

That my name be officially cleared and my wrongful detention documented and acknowledged. That I be compensated and given a formal apology for the unlawful arrest and reputation damage”.

Meanwhile, our correspondent further gathered that the embattled landlord, Mr. Edem, in his bid to back up his alleged false claims, had resorted to forging a purchasing receipt of a generating set with disjointed details.

If found guilty, Mr. Emmanuel David Edem may be jailed for forgery, conspiracy to bring false accusation, amongst others, while Inspector Amadi may be demoted or face tougher sanctions according to the degree of his involvement in the saga.
