The governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang has emerged as leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, hours after joining the party.
This is just as Sen. Simon Lalong, Senator representing Plateau South, has said that his leadership of the party in the state has ended with the defection of Gov Mutfwang into the APC.
Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the ruling APC, announced on Friday, January 2, 2026 that Gov Mutfwang has defected from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress.
Speaking after his formal defection into the APC, the Plateau state governor noted that he joined the ruling party, not for his private gains, but the overall interest of his state in particular, and Nigeria in general.
He acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s passion and love for Plateau state and Nigeria, saying it was reason for his joining the APC.
The governor also revealed that he had met with President Bola Tinubu privately as far back as July last year where the issue of him joining the party was discussed. But he said he never considered it until he was convinced that his defection would be in the best interest of his state and Nigeria.
…as Kano Governor Yusuf joins APC on Monday
In a related development, the governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, will formally join the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, on Monday.
Mr Yusuf, who is the lone governor elected on the platform of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, is already in Abuja for the final preparations of his defection.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and the National Chairman of the Party, Prof. Yitwalda Nentawe will host the governor in Abuja.
Already, the party leader in Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been recalled from a Dubai trip, just as the State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, was asked to cut short his lesser hajj trip to issue APC membership card to the governor at his Diso Ward of Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State during the week.
