Ahead of its rescheduled Presidential, National Assembly, Governorship and State House of Assembly primary elections slated for May 30, 2026, the Labour Party has cleared some of its governorship aspirants to participate in the said primary election.

According to the official report of the National Screening Committee for governorship aspirants – Batch A states, the Labour Party National Working Committee (NWC) has granted waiver of physical screening appearance to the National Leader and governor of Abia State; His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, and consequently stands cleared as the Party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2027 election.

Also cleared to contest for gubernatorial nomination is a Governorship aspirant from Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Michael Bush.

The report jointly signed by the Chairman of the National Screening Committee; Sen Nenadi Usman and Secretary; Hon. Iheancho Obioma stressed that the Committee acted pursuant to the Labour Party’s constitution and other relevant legal instruments in arriving at its verdict.

“Pursuant to the constitution of the Labour Party, the Party’s Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primary Elections, and the Rules of Procedures of the Committee, the National Screening Committee hereby presents its official report on the status/verdict of the screening exercise conducted for governorship aspirants in the Batch A states.

The Committee affirms that the screening process was conducted in substantial compliance with the prevailing legal, governance, and democratic frameworks governing the Party’s nomination process.

In exercise of its constitutional powers, the NWC granted waiver of physical screening appearance to the national leader of the party, H.E Dr. Alex Otti, OFR”, the report noted.

Other governorship aspirants cleared under the Batch A states were: Byuan Mathias of Benue State, Gbefwi Jonathan of Nasarawa Stat, Chima Ernest Boms of Rivers State, Nathan Sandra of Taraba State and Dr. Aji Kolomi of Yobe State.

According to the report, Mr. Emmanuel Friday Ben, a governorship aspirant from Akwa Ibom State and his Rivers State counterpart, Prince C. Chinwo were not cleared to participate in the May 30 gubernatorial primary election of the party.
