Foreign ISIS suspect arrested in Borno after ISWAP attack on Cross Kauwa repelled

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a suspected foreign operative of the Islamic State, believed to be of Moroccan origin, after repelling a failed ISWAP attack on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The arrest which has been confirmed by military sources, followed an intense gun battle between soldiers and fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province who attempted to overrun the border community in the early hours of the operation. The troops not only pushed back the attackers but launched immediate follow-up raids that led to the capture of the foreign suspect and the recovery of key materials.

According to security officials familiar with the operation, soldiers recovered communication gadgets and a camcorder from the scene. The camcorder was reportedly used by a slain terrorist cameraman who was documenting the assault for propaganda purposes.

Intelligence analysts who processed the contents of the recovered devices traced movement patterns and contacts to the Lake Chad Islands and the Abadam axis, both known to be transit and logistics corridors for ISWAP cells operating around the basin. A targeted sweep in that area led to the arrest of the suspect, who did not have Nigerian identification documents.

Military authorities said the suspect was airlifted from the field to a secure facility in Maiduguri for interrogation. He is currently being handled by a joint intelligence team.

A senior security source said the development could be a major breakthrough in understanding how foreign fighters are being moved into the region to support ISWAP operations.

“The significance of this arrest cannot be overstated. This is one of the few times we have apprehended a suspected foreign ISIS operative alive in the Lake Chad theater,” the source said.

“We expect his debriefing to shed light on ISIS international links, recruitment pipelines, financing routes, training methods, and the support network that sustains ISWAP in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.”

Cross Kauwa, a fishing and farming community on the fringes of Lake Chad, has come under repeated attacks in the last 18 months. The town sits close to major waterways that militants use to move men and supplies between Nigerian territory and the islands. Residents said Friday’s attack began with heavy gunfire before troops engaged the insurgents and forced them to withdraw.

Operation HADIN KAI, the military’s counterinsurgency operation in the North East, has in recent months intensified patrols and air surveillance around Kukawa, Marte and Abadam in an effort to cut off ISWAP access to Lake Chad. The operation has also focused on intercepting foreign fighters who intelligence reports say are being used to train local cells in the use of drones, IEDs and media production.

The recovery of the camcorder is particularly notable to security agencies. ISWAP and its parent ISIS network have relied heavily on media units to record attacks and recruit globally. Analysts believe the device may contain footage of recent operations as well as contacts to media cells outside the region.

Security experts in counterterrorism are of the view that the arrest points to ongoing attempts by ISIS central to maintain influence in West Africa despite territorial losses in the Middle East. The Lake Chad Basin remains attractive to the group because of its porous borders, limited state presence in some areas, and existing extremist infrastructure built over more than a decade of insurgency.

Humanitarian workers in Kukawa LGA said there were no civilian casualties reported in the Cross Kauwa attack, but farming activities in surrounding villages have been disrupted. Many residents who fled during the assault have begun returning after troops reinforced the area.

The military said investigations are ongoing and that findings from the suspect’s interrogation will be shared with regional partners under the Multinational Joint Task Force.

For now, authorities are treating the arrest as both an operational and intelligence win. If the suspect provides credible information on foreign facilitation networks, it could help troops disrupt future infiltration routes and financing channels that have kept ISWAP active around the Lake Chad Islands.

As interrogation continues in Maiduguri, security agencies say the focus will be on mapping the suspect’s entry route into Nigeria, identifying local collaborators, and tracing the origin of the equipment recovered during the operation.
