…calls for measurable representation, development in Ibesikpo Asutan

As Akwa Ibom State celebrates 39 years of its creation, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly candidate for Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency, Mr. Aniekan Johnson, has said the anniversary should go beyond ceremonies and speeches to become a moment of sincere reflection and honest self-assessment.
In a goodwill message to the people of Akwa Ibom State made available to newsmen in Uyo, Johnson congratulated the government and people of the state on the milestone, noting that the state has much to celebrate in terms of resilience, heritage and God-given possibilities.
“As Akwa Ibom marks 39 years of statehood, we celebrate our people, our resilience, our heritage and the remarkable possibilities with which God has blessed our land,” he said.
The NDC candidate, however, stressed that genuine celebration must not be limited to flags and official events, but must include a deep appraisal of how far the state has come and what still needs to be done.
“But genuine celebration must be more than flags, ceremonies and speeches. It must also be a sincere postmortem,” Johnson stated.
He posed critical questions that he said every Akwa Ibom person and leader must confront as the state enters its 40th year.
“Where are we today? What have we achieved? What opportunities have we missed? What worked—and what did not? What could we have done differently with the resources, talents and opportunities available to us?” he queried.
According to Johnson, only an honest evaluation of the past can help chart a better course for the future of the state.
“Only by honestly remembering what was possible can we intelligently determine what is still possible,” he noted.
Speaking specifically about Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, the Assembly hopeful said the anniversary reflection must translate into practical action and better representation for the people.
“For Ibesikpo Asutan, this reflection must become practical. Our people deserve representation that does not merely occupy a legislative seat, but uses that seat to create measurable value,” he said.
Johnson, who is contesting for Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency under the platform of the NDC, assured constituents that he is committed to redefining representation as measurable service rather than mere political occupation.
“As the NDC House of Assembly Candidate for Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency, I am committed to bringing a different emphasis: representation as measurable service,” he declared.
He outlined his priorities if elected, which he said would include stronger constituency oversight and accountability, deliberate advocacy for roads, water, healthcare, education and opportunities, practical support for agriculture, small businesses and youth enterprise, partnerships that attract investment and jobs, transparent tracking of constituency-related interventions, and legislation that removes barriers to productive enterprise.
The candidate further disclosed plans to champion a constituency development framework that would ensure inclusivity and transparency.
“I will also champion a constituency development framework in which every ward has a voice, every community has measurable priorities, and public interventions can be tracked from budget to delivery,” Johnson said.
He emphasized that development should not be tied to political loyalty, insisting that every citizen deserves to benefit from governance regardless of political affiliation.
“Our people should not have to choose between political loyalty and development,” he stated.
Johnson concluded by urging Akwa Ibom people to look beyond how far the state has come and focus on what kind of future is possible with courage, honesty and deliberate action.
“At 39, Akwa Ibom should not only ask how far we have come. We should ask, with courage and honesty: What kind of Akwa Ibom are we capable of becoming—and what must we change to get there?” he said.
He prayed that the anniversary would renew collective commitment to building a state where prosperity is productive, opportunity is broader, government is accountable, and development reaches beyond the visible few.
“May this anniversary renew our collective commitment to a state where prosperity is productive, opportunity is broader, government is accountable, and development reaches beyond the visible few,” he said.
“Happy 39th Anniversary, Akwa Ibom State. May the next chapter be defined more by what we deliberately build together,” Johnson concluded.
