…soccer enthusiasts kick over Calvin Bassey
The official AFCON Team of the Season has been released, recognizing the players who delivered the most consistent and outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen leads the attack after a dominant campaign that combined pace, power and clinical finishing. He is supported in the front line by Senegal’s Sadio Mané, Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, all of whom played key roles for their national teams with decisive goals, assists and leadership.
The midfield is anchored by Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye, whose experience and tactical discipline brought stability, alongside Ivory Coast’s Ibrahim Sangaré, who impressed with his strength, ball recovery and ability to drive play forward.
Defensively, Nigeria’s Bruno Onyemaechi earns his place after a series of composed and energetic displays at left-back. He is joined by Egypt’s Rami Rabia, who provided calm leadership in central defence, Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui, noted for his balance between defence and attack, and Senegal’s Krepin Diatta, whose pace and versatility stood out on the flank.
In goal, Senegal’s Edouard Mendy completes the selection, following a tournament marked by crucial saves and consistency.
Meanwhile, some football enthusiasts have reacted over the absence of the Super Eagles’ sensational center defender, Calvin Bassey.
According to a commentator “I still believe that Bassey (Calvin) did so well in the just concluded AFCON to have deserved a place in the team”.
