The Lagos State Government has urged residents to report any landlord or agent demanding more than one year’s rent, stating that such practice violates state regulations.
Barakat Bakare, Special Adviser on Housing to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), made the call during an appearance on TVC’s Your View. She emphasized the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to curbing excesses by landlords, agents, and developers.
Bakare clarified that while landlords can collect rent monthly, quarterly, or annually, collecting more than one year’s rent in advance is not permitted. “The minimum you can collect is one month’s rent… nothing beyond a year,” she stated.
She advised tenants to report violations in person at LASRERA’s office in Block 21, First Floor, Alausa, Ikeja, or via the agency’s website. These reports, she said, will allow for proper investigation and possible sanctions.
