F/ball: Mikel Obi speaks on choice of GOAT between Messi, Ronaldo

By James Rowland

The Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate has raged for nearly two decades, but former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has delivered one of his bluntest verdicts yet, placing Messi in a class entirely separate and saying he does not rate Ronaldo among the 20 greatest players in football history.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview, the 2012 Champions League winner said physical attributes often cloud judgment when fans compare the two icons, but when it comes purely to football, the gap is clear.

“Some people choose Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi because Ronaldo is taller, more muscular, and more handsome,” Mikel said.

“Those are personal preferences, and everyone is entitled to them. But when it comes strictly to football, I don’t believe Ronaldo ranks among the top 20 greatest players of all time.”

It is a remarkable statement from a player who spent more than a decade at the highest level of European football and faced both men multiple times. Mikel, who won the Premier League twice and the Champions League with Chelsea, said the difference was obvious in the way teams prepared for matches.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Mikel revealed Chelsea never designed an entire tactical plan around containing Ronaldo.

“During my time at Chelsea, we never built our game plan around stopping Ronaldo,” he explained. “He was treated like any other top-class opponent because we trusted Ashley Cole to deal with him.”

The respect for Barcelona, and for Messi in particular, was on another level entirely, according to the Nigerian.

“However, facing Barcelona was a completely different challenge,” Mikel said. “Every tactical meeting, every training session, and every discussion centered on one question: How do we stop Messi? He was the player we feared the most because he could change the outcome of a match in an instant.”

Mikel described Messi as a problem that could not be solved by one defender. He said teams had to commit multiple players just to contain the Argentine, and even then success was not guaranteed.

“The truth is, no single player could mark Messi,” he said. “It often took several players working together to limit his influence, and even then, he would still find a way to dribble past them, create chances, score goals, and dominate the game. If you found yourself one-on-one with Messi, you were almost certainly in trouble.”

The former Super Eagles captain was quick to stress that his comments were not intended as an attack on Ronaldo, who has won five Ballon d’Or awards and remains the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.

“This is not meant to disrespect Ronaldo,” Mikel said. “He is one of the greatest footballers of his generation and has achieved things that few players ever will.”

But for Mikel, greatness in football extends beyond goals and trophies. He pointed to the all-round qualities that defined Messi’s career at Barcelona and with Argentina.

“But football is about much more than scoring goals,” he said. “It is also about dribbling, creativity, vision, playmaking, assists, and controlling the rhythm of a game. In all of those areas, Messi has consistently set the highest standard.”

That all-around influence, Mikel argued, is why the comparison itself feels flawed.

“That is why, for me, comparing any player to Messi is simply unfair,” he concluded.

Mikel faced Messi on several occasions, most memorably in Chelsea’s famous 2012 Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona at Camp Nou, a match where Chelsea’s defensive discipline was tested repeatedly by Messi’s movement. He also played against Ronaldo numerous times in Premier League and Champions League fixtures.

His comments will reignite the debate that has divided dressing rooms, pundits and fans since 2008. While Ronaldo built his reputation on athleticism, aerial dominance and relentless goal scoring, Messi has been celebrated for close control, vision and the ability to dictate matches from midfield to attack.

For Mikel, who played under managers including Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte, the choice comes down to influence on the game itself. And in that regard, he sees no contest.
