Confusion and grief have gripped Katsina United and Nigerian football fans this week after conflicting reports emerged surrounding the death of club defender Chinedu Ozor. What began as a tragic on-field collapse has snowballed into viral claims that the player “resurrected” in a mortuary, forcing the club to issue a firm clarification.
The Incident at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium
The drama unfolded on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a pre-season friendly between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

According to those accounts, mortuary staff noticed movement and the player was hurriedly returned to the hospital. The reports further alleged that he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), placed on oxygen, and that he had in fact been “declared dead twice” before the supposed revival.
The sensational headline “Katsina United Player Found Alive in Mortuary” quickly went viral on X, Facebook, and WhatsApp groups. For a few hours, hope surged among fans who shared prayer messages and videos, praying for what many called a miracle.
The Club’s Clarification: The True Position
Faced with mounting speculation, Katsina United issued a second statement on Wednesday to set the record straight.
The club categorically denied that Chinedu Ozor came back to life in the mortuary or that he was currently receiving treatment in an ICU.
According to the clarification obtained by this paper, the confusion stemmed from a request made by the player’s family for further medical confirmation following the initial pronouncement of death. That request for a second opinion, the club explained, was a normal procedure given the circumstances and the understandable distress of the family. Somewhere in the process, the information was misinterpreted and amplified online as a story of resurrection.
“As of the latest medical briefing available to the club, Chinedu Ozor remains confirmed dead,” a senior club official told reporters in Katsina.
“There is no credible confirmation from Katsina United, the attending hospital, or the medical team that he regained consciousness, was found alive in the mortuary, or was admitted to ICU.”
The club urged fans and the media to desist from spreading unverified information and to respect the privacy of the Ozor family during this difficult period.
