Mary Habila’s Death: Igbo Academics demand credible probe

*Transparency is critical to restoring public trust in justice system – FOSAD

By Our Correspondent

The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called for a “credible, independent and transparent” investigation into the death of 26-year-old Mary Habila, who died on June 27, 2026 at the Uburu residence of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

In a press statement signed by its President, Dr. Stephen Nwala, and Secretary-General, Dr. Uzor Ngoladi, the group said the “tragic and controversial” circumstances surrounding Habila’s death have generated widespread public concern and require urgent attention from authorities.

“We express profound sadness over the tragic and controversial death of 26-year-old Mary Habila,” FOSAD stated. “The untimely death of a young Nigerian under circumstances that have generated widespread public concern is a matter that deserves the highest level of attention from relevant authorities.”

According to FOSAD, conflicting accounts and public disclosures that have emerged in recent days have only deepened questions about what transpired at the minister’s home in Uburu, Ebonyi State. The organization noted that the level of national and international attention the case has attracted makes it imperative for investigators to proceed with “utmost professionalism and openness.”

FOSAD urged the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant investigative agencies to ensure every aspect of the case is thoroughly examined. The group specifically listed forensic analysis, witness interviews, digital evidence, medical records and other materials as critical to establishing the facts.

The forum also made a direct appeal regarding the proposed autopsy.
“We urge that the proposed autopsy be conducted in accordance with internationally accepted forensic standards and, where necessary, with the participation of independent forensic pathologists to guarantee credibility and public confidence in the outcome,” the statement said.

For FOSAD, the integrity of the process is as important as the outcome. The group warned that any perception that the investigation is compromised would further damage public confidence in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

“We believe that justice can only be served when investigations are conducted professionally, independently and without fear or favour,” FOSAD said. “Any perception that the investigation is compromised would undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s criminal justice system and further erode citizens’ trust in public institutions.”

While pushing for accountability, the academic body stressed the importance of due process. It emphasized that no individual should be presumed guilty without credible evidence, but added that no one, regardless of public office or political influence, should be shielded from lawful scrutiny.

“Equally, no person, regardless of public office or influence, should be shielded from lawful scrutiny where legitimate questions require answers,” the statement read.

The death has sparked intense discussion on social media and in civil society circles, with many Nigerians demanding answers. FOSAD appealed to the media, civil society organizations and the general public to avoid speculation and the spread of unverified claims that could prejudice the investigation.

“We appeal to the media, civil society organizations and members of the public to exercise restraint by avoiding speculation, misinformation or the dissemination of unverified claims that may prejudice ongoing investigations,” the forum said. “Responsible public discourse should complement, rather than undermine, the search for truth and justice.”

FOSAD extended condolences to Habila’s family, friends and colleagues, and pledged solidarity with them during what it described as a difficult period. The group urged authorities to ensure the family is treated with “dignity, compassion and fairness” throughout the investigative process.

“Ultimately, justice for Mary Habila is not only about determining the cause and circumstances of her death; it is also about reaffirming the principle that every Nigerian life matters and that every suspicious death deserves a credible and transparent investigation,” FOSAD concluded.

The Minister of Works has addressed the press on the incident, calling for caution regarding alleged spread of unfounded rumours. The Nigeria Police Force in Ebonyi State confirmed it is aware of the case, but said investigations are ongoing.

The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors is a body of scholars and professionals from the South-East geopolitical zone committed to issues of justice, accountability and the rule of law.
