Muhammadu Buhari (1942-2025): His Marriages, His Children
Before rising to national prominence, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s first marriage was to Safinatu Yusuf in 1971.
Their union was one of youthful love and shared dreams. Safinatu, often described as gentle and reserved, stood by Buhari during his early military career and his time as Head of State in the 1980s. Together, they welcomed five children:
1. Zulaihat (Zulai) – The eldest, who has largely stayed out of the public eye.
2. Fatima – A medical doctor who has maintained a quiet but dignified presence.
3. Musa – Known for his discretion, he has rarely engaged in public discourse.
4. Hadiza (Dee) – The most socially visible of Safinatu’s children, she has been involved in humanitarian efforts.
5. Safinatu (Safi)– The youngest, who has chosen a life away from the spotlight.
Sadly, the marriage dissolved in 1988, a separation attributed to personal differences. Safinatu passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of quiet resilience.
In 1989, Buhari married Aisha Halilu, a woman whose intelligence and confidence would later redefine the role of a Nigerian First Lady.
Aisha, an accomplished entrepreneur and beauty therapist, brought vibrancy to Buhari’s life. Their marriage has been one of mutual respect, though not without its public complexities.
Aisha is known for her outspoken nature, occasionally making headlines for her candid remarks on national issues. Together, they have five children:
1. Yusuf Buhari– Perhaps the most prominent, Yusuf made headlines after a near-fatal bike accident in 2017. He has since recovered and maintains a low profile.
2. Zahra – A graduate of the University of Surrey, she is a businesswoman and advocate for women’s health.
3. Halima – She has ventured into entrepreneurship and fashion.
4. Amina– The quieter of the siblings, she focuses on her personal and professional growth.
5. Mashood– The youngest, details about him remain largely private.
Rumours have long swirled about a third wife, Hajiya Fatima Lamy, whom Buhari is said to have married in the 1980s.
However, neither Buhari nor his family has officially confirmed this union. If true, Fatima has remained entirely out of the public domain.
The Buhari family offers a compelling chapter in Nigeria’s modern history.
