Nigeria @66: We’ve good laws, poor oversight our problem – Uyo Reps candidate

UYO — The Labour Party candidate for Uyo/Ibesikpo Asutan/Nsit Atai/Uruan Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Mr. Ikakke Bassey, has felicitated with his constituents and Nigerians on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the nation’s independence, thanking God for keeping the country together despite its numerous political challenges.

In his Independence Day goodwill message to constituents and Nigerians at large on Thursday, 1st October, 2026, the National Assembly hopeful appreciated past leaders and compatriots who sacrificed their comforts and resources for the betterment of Nigeria.

Bassey, a development expert and grassroots mobilizer from Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, noted that Nigeria’s journey since 1960 has been turbulent, marked by civil war, military interregnums, political crises and economic uncertainties, yet the country has remained one indivisible entity.

He advised that the resilience of the Nigerian people and the sacrifices of founding fathers and nationalists who fought for independence and for the sustenance of democracy should not be taken for granted.

According to him, Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources, as well as sound legislations and policies that ordinarily would have taken the country to the Eldorado, but regretted that the country has remained backward due to poor implementation, negligence and lack of effective oversight by those entrusted with legislative representation.

He observed that over the decades, the National Assembly has enacted several progressive laws aimed at addressing education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment and economic development, but many of such laws have remained on paper without impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“The problem of Nigeria has never been lack of good laws or policies. We have some of the best legislations in the world that would have taken Nigeria to the Eldorado. Our backwardness is as a result of poor implementation due to negligence and lack of effective oversight,” Ikakke stated.

The Labour Party standard bearer maintained that the core function of a lawmaker goes beyond making laws to ensuring that such laws are implemented for the benefit of the people through robust oversight of Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.

He assured that if given the mandate to represent Uyo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2027, he would bring to bear his youthful dynamism and experience as a development expert to champion national consciousness at the National Assembly.

Ikakke promised to pursue people-centric legislation that will directly impact the lives of his constituents in Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Atai and Uruan Local Government Areas, and Nigerians in general.

He maintained that his focus will be on laws that promote youth employment and empowerment, welfare for the elderly, support for small and medium enterprises, access to credit for farmers, functional education and primary healthcare, as well as infrastructure development in rural communities.

“If elected in 2027, I shall bring to bear my dynamism in championing national consciousness at the Red Chambers with a view to bettering Nigerians’ lives through people-centric legislation and oversight for the benefit of my constituents in particular, and the entire country in general,” he assured.

The LP candidate further called on Nigerians not to despair despite the current economic hardship and security challenges facing the country, expressing optimism that with the right leadership and active citizen participation, Nigeria will still fulfill its great potential.

While urging the people of Uyo Federal Constituency who have attained voting age to keep safe their PVCs as their weapons for liberation in 2027, he admonished them to remain united, hopeful and committed to the project of building a better Nigeria; praying for peace, progress and prosperity for the nation as it marks its 66th independence anniversary.
