The United States government has written to inform Nigerian-born Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, of the revocation of his US visa, thereby temporarily preventing him from entering the country.
In a letter dated October 23, 2025, Soyinka was notified of the decision, which the famous academic described as surprising.
Prof Soyinka, while responding to the development said he is unaware of any wrongdoing attributable to him that could warrant the Visa revocation.
The American government while revoking the said visa noted that it was due to unspecified “additional information” that became available after the visa was issued, according to a letter from the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.
Insisting that he had no past criminal record, Prof Soyinka believes it might be connected to broader policy changes or his criticism of certain U.S. policies, particularly under the Trump administration.
It could be recalled that Soyinka had previously torn up his U.S. Green Card in protest of Trump’s alleged divisive leadership and had reportedly refused to attend a visa re-interview requested by the U.S. Consulate.
