By Ime Silas

Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, Ph.D, has made known his commitment to collaborating with the University of Uyo, UniUyo, towards ensuring academic advancement in line with the ARISE Agenda of his government.

Dr. Eno, who disclosed this in a statement circulated today, also declared his position on the ongoing process of selection of a substantive Vice Chancellor for the University.

“Yesterday, I received the management of the University of Uyo and assured them of our support for a transparent, peaceful, and credible process in the selection of a substantive Vice Chancellor”, Gov. Eno, a UniUyo alumnus said.

The governor continued: “My position is simple: the University Council should be allowed to choose the best candidate, one who truly has the interest of the institution at heart. Our role as a State Government is to ensure peace, orderliness, and an enabling environment.

As an alumnus, I remain committed to collaborating with UniUyo in areas that advance education, in line with our ARISE Agenda. Education remains a shared responsibility, and we will continue to support its growth and stability”.

It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu on December 15, 2025, appointed Prof. Samuel Gbadebo Odewumi as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.

Samuel Odewumi, a Professor of Transport Planning and Policy, is a renowned academic and administrator, previously serving as the Dean of the School of Transport and Logistics at Lagos State University (LASU).

Before Odewumi’s appointment, there was a leadership tussle, and Professor Antonia Essien, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), who was reportedly recommended as Acting VC, faced serious opposition from stakeholders of the University community.

The University’s Senate and Governing Council have had disagreements over the appointment, leading to multiple failed attempts to nominate an Acting VC.
