Vice Chancellor under fire, as corruption scandal rocks University of Uyo

…EFCC arrests VC’s man, Ekaiko, others under scrutiny

The current administration of the University of Uyo, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, is facing growing criticism from members of the academic community and concerned stakeholders over allegations of widespread corruption, administrative mismanagement, and a steady decline in academic standards.

Despite the significant revenue generated through tuition, acceptance fees, and other levies, the physical state of the university remains a cause for concern. Campus facilities appear neglected and unsanitary, raising questions about the utilization of the institution’s financial resources. Students and staff alike have expressed disappointment at the poor environmental conditions, which many argue do not reflect the level of funding received.

A particularly controversial issue involves the conduct of the university’s postgraduate admissions process. Investigations reveal that admissions are granted on a rolling basis, sometimes even while semester examinations are ongoing. Critics argue that this practice is driven more by revenue generation than by academic integrity, contributing to the erosion of educational standards in the institution.

Since assuming office, Prof. Ndaeyo has come under increasing scrutiny for what many describe as a lack of visible progress or developmental projects. Comparisons have been drawn between his tenure and those of his predecessors—Professors Akpan Ekpo, Akaneren Essien, Comfort Ekpo, and Enefiok Essien—who are credited with implementing policies and projects that advanced the university’s profile. The absence of comparable achievements under the current leadership has led to speculation and discontent within the academic community.

A major scandal that has cast a shadow over Prof. Ndaeyo’s administration involves the arrest and detention of Mr. Buky Ekaiko, a senior management staff of the university, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mr. Ekaiko is alleged to have used his privately-owned company to collect alumni dues and school fees on behalf of the university, a move reportedly approved by Prof. Ndaeyo. This arrangement, sources claim, became a conduit for financial misconduct involving key figures within the administration.

With less than four months remaining in his tenure, stakeholders are calling for transparency, accountability, and a thorough audit of Prof. Ndaeyo’s administration. Many believe that the integrity of the University of Uyo—once seen as a beacon of academic excellence in the region—depends on restoring confidence in its leadership and operations.

As investigations continue, the university community awaits clear answers and decisive action from relevant authorities to address these concerns and safeguard the institution’s future.
