He didn’t resign. He was sacked – Sowore
Nigeria’s defence minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment, with immediate effect.
This was disclosed via a State House Press Release signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga
According to the statement, Abubakar, in a letter dated December 1, sent to President Bola Tinubu, said he was resigning on health grounds.
Onanuga’s statement further revealed that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar for his services to the nation.
“President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, was a two-term governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023. He was appointed as a minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course”, the release stated.
Recall that the now former Defence Minister had recently said that the locations of the terrorists have been identified to be in the thick forests. Badaru Abubakar was quoted to have said that the thickness of the forests made it difficult for bombs from the Nigerian military forces to penetrate.
His statement drew widespread condemnation from Nigerians within and outside the country with many demanding his immediate resignation.
Terrorists have been killing and kidnapping Nigerians including military personnel, women and school children, while Christian communities in the Muslim-dominated northern region of Nigeria have been massively killed, their worship halls razed.

Reacting to the news of resignation, Activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr Omoyele Sowore in a statement said: “The useless Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, did not resign. He was asked by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step aside to make room for former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa to be appointed Defence Minister.
There are also strong indications that US President Donald Trump’s United States military is pressing for the removal of the equally ineffective and utterly useless Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, citing serious concerns over intelligence sharing and collaboration.
Matawalle is widely accused of having links to bandits in Zamfara”.
