A resident of Uga in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has narrated how the suspected killer of a young woman identified as Mmesoma was tracked down after the crime, saying the suspect became visibly restless after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend.
The narrator, whose account has been circulating widely, gave a step-by-step breakdown of how the case unfolded from Friday, October 16, 2026, when the victim was last seen alive.
According to him, on that Friday, Mmesoma took a commercial motorcycle to her ex-boyfriend’s house. When she arrived at the vicinity, she placed a call to him.
“When she arrived, she called him, and he told her he was coming. She then collected the motorcycle rider’s phone number and told him to return and pick her up in a few minutes. She flashed the rider’s number, which he saved,” the man said in his account.
That brief exchange, he said, later became the most important lead in the investigation.
Two days later, on Sunday, the suspect, identified simply as Chima, reportedly surfaced at a popular market in the area and began telling people that his girlfriend was missing.
The narrator said Chima introduced a different narrative to divert attention. He claimed that when he travelled to Benin weeks earlier, he was accused of stealing gold worth N18 million, and suggested that those who accused him might have kidnapped his girlfriend.
“The young man was restless after killing his ex-girlfriend. On Sunday he was in the market telling someone that they were looking for his girlfriend. He claimed that when he travelled to Benin weeks earlier, he was accused of stealing gold worth N18 million, suggesting that the people involved might have kidnapped his girlfriend,” the source narrated.
He reportedly took the same story to the local security commander in Uga, seeking help to find her. But the commander became suspicious.
According to the account, the commander questioned him directly, asking whether anyone had accused him of killing the girl.
“When Chima answered no, the commander reportedly asked why he was bothering himself if no one was accusing him. That was when the commander started watching him closely,” the man said.
On Tuesday, the commander and Chima went to the police station to make a formal entry about the missing girl. The police interrogated Chima, and thereafter, a photograph of Mmesoma was circulated on social media platforms as search efforts intensified.
The breakthrough came from the motorcycle riders’ park.
“When the motorcycle rider saw her picture online, he reportedly told his fellow riders that he had taken the young woman to a house on Friday. Concerned about her disappearance, the riders informed the commander, who then took the rider to the police,” he narrated.
With a witness now placing Mmesoma at Chima’s location on the day she disappeared, the police obtained a search warrant. By that time, Chima had already been taken into custody for further interrogation.
The source said the motorcycle rider led security operatives to the exact compound where he dropped Mmesoma off on Friday.
“Upon arriving at the house, they reportedly found a broken phone and a SIM card along the way. The SIM card was identified as Mmesoma’s, and the suspect subsequently confessed,” the narrator stated.
Police authorities in Anambra State are yet to release an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report. The case has, however, sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for justice for Mmesoma and stronger protection for young women in abusive relationships.
Residents of Uga have described the incident as shocking, saying such violent crime is rare in the community.
The underlying intent of the confessed killer and the circumstances that led to the alleged gruesome murder have also not been made public as at press time.
