Former Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Diseye Desire Nsirim, has died after a brief illness.
According to family sources, she died on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Nsirim, who served as the 27th Commissioner of Police in Niger State, made history as the first woman to hold the position, serving from 2012 to 2014.
Her death was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Niger State Police Command describing her as a distinguished officer and dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to crime prevention, public safety and the maintenance of law and order in the state and the country at large.
Diseye Desire Nsirim was one of the most respected female officers in the history of the Nigeria Police Force. During her time as Commissioner of Police in Niger State, she was noted for her firm but humane approach to policing, her commitment to community engagement and her zero tolerance for crime.
Colleagues who served with her recall her as a disciplined, courageous and professional officer who broke barriers at a time when very few women rose to the pinnacle of police leadership in Nigeria.
As the first female Commissioner of Police in Niger State, she paved the way for other female officers and inspired a generation of young women to pursue careers in law enforcement and public service.
Her tenure between 2012 and 2014 was marked by efforts to strengthen security architecture in Niger State, improve police-community relations and enhance the welfare of officers under her command.
Born with a passion for service, Nsirim rose through the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force through hard work, integrity and dedication to duty. She held several strategic positions before her appointment as Commissioner of Police in Niger State, and left a legacy of professionalism wherever she served.
The news of her passing has thrown the police community and the people of Niger State into mourning, with tributes pouring in from serving and retired officers, family members and friends.
The Niger State Police Command, in its condolence message, said her contributions to crime prevention, public safety and the maintenance of law and order will not be forgotten.
“She was a dedicated officer. She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in peace,” said a close colleague of the departed former CP.
Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
She is survived by family members, colleagues and a legion of admirers who will remember her for her service to the nation.
