Kidney Failure in South-East Nigeria: A Growing Public Health Crisis That Demands Urgent Action

The increasing reports of kidney-related illnesses in South-East Nigeria should concern everyone. While there is no single cause of kidney failure, the rising number of cases highlights the need for serious public health interventions, stronger regulation, and greater public awareness.

In my opinion, one possible contributing factor is the high rate of alcohol consumption in the region. Excessive alcohol intake can damage the kidneys over time, especially when combined with dehydration and other health conditions. There are also persistent concerns about counterfeit or substandard alcoholic beverages circulating in some markets. If true, this poses an even greater health risk and calls for stricter enforcement by regulatory agencies.

Another issue is the widespread practice of self-medication. Many people take painkillers, antibiotics, and other medications without proper medical advice. Prolonged or excessive use of certain drugs can harm the kidneys. It is also worrying that some unqualified individuals reportedly prescribe medications outside their professional scope, putting lives at risk.

The quality of drinking water is another area that deserves attention. While many sachet (“pure”) water producers comply with regulations, there are concerns that some unregistered producers operate without meeting the required health standards. Ensuring that all drinking water is properly treated and certified should remain a priority for health authorities.

Herbal medicines also require greater caution. Although some traditional remedies may have benefits, taking herbal mixtures of unknown composition or dosage can expose the kidneys to harmful substances. Consumers should seek professional medical advice before relying on such treatments.

There have also been public concerns about the preparation of Apu (cassava fufu). Some people allege that unsafe chemicals such as detergents or bleach are used during processing to speed up production or improve appearance. If such practices occur, they could pose serious health risks. These allegations should be thoroughly investigated by the appropriate food safety authorities, and anyone found endangering public health should face the full weight of the law.

Kidney disease is a complex condition influenced by several factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes, genetics, infections, dehydration, certain medications, and lifestyle choices. Therefore, addressing the problem requires a comprehensive approach rather than blaming a single cause.

State governments across the South-East, health regulators, food safety agencies, and community leaders should work together to strengthen enforcement against fake products, regulate food and water production, crack down on unqualified medical practice, and educate the public on healthy living. Protecting public health must be a shared responsibility before more lives are lost.
