Nollywood filmmaker Ugezu apologizes to Daniel Kanu over defamatory Claims

By Kehinde Jacobs

Veteran Nollywood actor, filmmaker, and public commentator Ugezu J. Ugezu, also known as Nze Ukwu, has tendered an “unreserved” public apology to Mr. Daniel Kanu following a controversial social media publication that wrongly suggested Kanu had been convicted of financial crimes.

In a statement released and signed by “Nze Ukwu Ugezu J. Ugezu,” the filmmaker admitted he made assertions “which I ought not to have made” and withdrew the claims in their entirety.

The apology comes after what Ugezu described as “a careful review of the matter,” during which he acknowledged he lacked credible evidence to support his allegations.

The dispute centers on a post Ugezu published on his official social media page, which created the impression that Mr. Daniel Kanu had been “convicted, imprisoned, or found guilty of financial crimes.” The post quickly drew attention online and was shared widely, raising concerns about reputational damage.

Full Retraction and Admission of Fault

Ugezu did not mince words in retracting the publication. “I have since discovered that I do not possess any credible evidence to support those assertions, and I acknowledge that making them was wrong,” he stated in the apology.

He went further to withdraw every element of the original claim. “I hereby withdraw and retract those statements in their entirety and unequivocally state that I have no basis upon which to maintain them,” the statement read.

The filmmaker, known for his outspoken commentary on social and political issues, said the incident served as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with public influence. “As a writer, filmmaker, and public commentator, I understand that my words carry weight and can influence public perception,” Ugezu wrote. “For that reason, I accept full responsibility for the publication and for the hurt, embarrassment, inconvenience, and damage it may have caused to Mr. Daniel Kanu, his family, friends, associates, and admirers.”

Direct Apology to Kanu and the Public

Addressing Mr. Kanu directly, Ugezu expressed regret for the personal pain and public controversy the post may have caused. “To Mr. Daniel Kanu personally, I offer my sincere apology. I regret that my publication may have caused you pain or brought your name into controversy,” he said.

Ugezu stressed that intent does not negate impact. “That was never my intention, but I recognise that intentions do not erase consequences, and for that reason I am deeply sorry,” he added.

The apology also extended to the wider public. “I also apologise to members of the public who may have been misled by the publication,” he noted, acknowledging that misinformation can spread rapidly once released into the public domain.

Pledge of Greater Diligence Going Forward

In a key part of the statement, Ugezu committed to stricter standards of verification before making future public comments. “Going forward, I shall exercise greater diligence in verifying information before making public commentaries, in keeping with my commitment to truth, fairness, and responsible public engagement,” he pledged.

The commitment comes at a time when public figures and media personalities face increasing scrutiny over the spread of unverified information on social media platforms. Legal experts have repeatedly warned that defamatory statements, even when posted informally online, can attract civil and criminal liability under Nigerian law.

Reactions and Context

Mr. Daniel Kanu, the subject of the now-retracted publication, has not issued a separate public statement as of press time. However, sources close to him confirmed receipt of Ugezu’s apology and said the matter was being reviewed by his legal team.

Reputational harm from false allegations of financial crime can be severe, particularly in Nigeria’s business and public sectors where integrity and trust are critical. Defamation involving claims of conviction or imprisonment is considered among the most serious forms of libel because of the stigma and practical consequences attached.

Ugezu J. Ugezu is a recognizable figure in Nollywood with decades of experience as an actor, director, and screenwriter. Beyond entertainment, he has built a following for his regular commentary on governance, culture, and national affairs. His apology therefore carries weight beyond the immediate parties involved, serving as a public example of accountability in the digital age.

A Closing Note of Remorse

The statement concluded with a reiteration of remorse. “Once again, I offer my unreserved apology to Mr. Daniel Kanu and all those affected by my publication,” Ugezu wrote before signing off as “Nze Ukwu Ugezu J. Ugezu.”

The episode underscores the growing tension between free expression and responsible speech on social media. As more public commentators engage audiences directly online, the line between opinion and defamation becomes sharper, and the cost of crossing it more visible.

With this public retraction, Ugezu has closed the chapter on the specific allegations against Mr. Kanu. Whether it will restore the reputation of the individual at the center of the controversy remains to be seen, but the apology itself stands as a rare and detailed admission of fault in Nigeria’s often combative social media space.
