Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighter nabbed as troops tighten security

…suspect was on reconnaissance mission -Military sources

MAIDUGURI, Borno State— Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled an attempted infiltration of Maiduguri after arresting a suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighter at a security checkpoint on the outskirts of the Borno State capital, military sources confirmed on Monday.

The suspect, identified only as Saina, was apprehended at about 4:42 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2026, at Kilo Papa, a strategic entry point into Maiduguri. Personnel of the 21 Special Armoured Brigade, working with allied security operatives deployed at the location, effected the arrest during a routine stop-and-search operation.

According to security officials familiar with the incident, Saina was traveling in a civilian vehicle when troops flagged him for further inspection. His clothing drew immediate attention. The suspect was found wearing a woodland camouflage trouser, an item inconsistent with civilian dress and commonly associated with insurgent elements operating in the Lake Chad Basin.

“The attire raised suspicion among the troops on duty, and that prompted a more detailed search and questioning,” a security source said. “It is one of the tell-tale signs our men are trained to watch for at these checkpoints.”

During preliminary interrogation at the checkpoint, Saina initially attempted to mislead security personnel. He claimed to be affiliated with hybrid forces operating in Kumshe, a border community in the Gwoza Local Government Area that has seen joint military and local security operations in recent months.

However, military intelligence officers said inconsistencies in his account led to deeper questioning. After further checks, the suspect was said to have admitted to being an active member of a terrorist group. Security sources believe he was on a reconnaissance mission aimed at gathering information on troop deployments and civilian movement ahead of possible attacks in and around Maiduguri.

The arrest comes amid heightened security around the state capital, which has remained a primary target for insurgent groups seeking to breach its defenses. Operation Hadin Kai, the military’s counter-insurgency operation in the Northeast, has intensified surveillance and random checks at all major entry and exit points following recent intelligence reports of renewed infiltration attempts.

“The timely detection and arrest of this suspect underscores the vigilance of our troops and the effectiveness of our layered security architecture around Maiduguri,” a senior military officer involved in the operation stated.

“We will not relent until these criminal elements are completely denied freedom of movement.”

Saina is currently in military custody and undergoing further interrogation. Authorities said he will be transferred to the appropriate intelligence facility for detailed investigation and possible prosecution.

Residents of the Kilo Papa area and surrounding communities welcomed the arrest, noting that checkpoints have become critical to maintaining relative calm in the city.

“We are grateful to the soldiers. Anytime they stop vehicles and check people thoroughly, it gives us more confidence to go about our business,” said Aisha Modu, a trader who passes through the checkpoint daily.

The Nigerian military has in recent months recorded a series of interdictions of suspected insurgents attempting to enter urban centers in Borno and Yobe states. Security analysts attribute the successes to improved inter-agency collaboration, better intelligence sharing, and increased community cooperation.

While the security situation in Borno has improved significantly compared to a decade ago, officials caution that remnants of Boko Haram and its ISWAP faction continue to pose threats through espionage, abductions, and hit-and-run attacks.
