Thomas Onwubiko celebrates Amuwo-Odofin constituents on Democracy Day

…urges Nigerians to keep hope alive

Lagos, Nigeria – June 12, 2026

The candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Amuwo-Odofin Constituency under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, has congratulated the people of Amuwo-Odofin and Nigerians at large on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

In a statement issued on Friday to commemorate the 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria, Onwubiko called on citizens to remain hopeful and committed to the ideals of democracy despite the numerous challenges confronting the nation.

The House of Assembly hopeful described June 12 as a historic day in Nigeria’s political evolution, noting that it symbolizes the resilience of the Nigerian people and their unwavering commitment to democratic values, justice, and good governance.

According to him, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola should continue to inspire Nigerians to defend democratic institutions and work collectively towards building a more prosperous nation.

“Today, we celebrate not only 27 years of uninterrupted democracy but also the courage, sacrifice, and determination of millions of Nigerians who fought tirelessly for the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule in our country,” Onwubiko said.

He noted that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians currently enjoy.

“June 12 remains a defining moment in our national history. It reminds us of the price paid by heroes and heroines of democracy, particularly Chief MKO Abiola, whose unwavering commitment to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians continues to inspire generations,” he stated.

Onwubiko urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s future despite prevailing economic and social challenges, emphasizing that democracy remains the best platform for achieving national development and social progress.

He called on citizens to continue participating actively in the democratic process by holding leaders accountable, promoting peaceful coexistence, and contributing positively to national development.

“While our nation continues to face significant challenges, we must not surrender to despair. Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, hopeful, and committed to the common good. We must continue to believe in Nigeria and work together to build the country of our dreams,” he said.

The NDC candidate stressed that the legacy of Chief MKO Abiola goes beyond politics, describing him as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and patriotism whose vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria remains relevant today.

According to Onwubiko, preserving the legacy of the late democracy icon requires a renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and the rule of law.

“To truly honour Chief MKO Abiola, we must uphold the values he stood for—justice, fairness, equality, and the protection of the democratic rights of all citizens. His dream was for a Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliation,” he added.

Addressing the people of Amuwo-Odofin Constituency, Onwubiko thanked residents for their continued support and confidence in his vision for the constituency and pledged to champion policies and initiatives that would improve the welfare of the people if elected.

He reaffirmed his commitment to quality representation, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for residents of the constituency.

“I celebrate the resilient and hardworking people of Amuwo-Odofin on this important occasion. Together, we can build a constituency that reflects the aspirations and dreams of our people. I remain committed to serving with integrity, dedication, and a genuine passion for progress,” he said.

The politician also called on young Nigerians to take greater interest in governance and leadership, stressing that the future of the country depends largely on the active participation of its youth population.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day, I encourage our young people to remain engaged, informed, and involved in the democratic process. The future belongs to them, and their voices must continue to shape the direction of our nation,” he stated.

Onwubiko concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration, expressing optimism that the country would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger.

“Let us keep hope alive and continue to believe in the promise of Nigeria. Together, we can uphold the legacy of Chief MKO Abiola and strengthen the foundations of our democracy for future generations.

“Happy Democracy Day to the good people of Amuwo-Odofin and all Nigerians,” he said.
