Uyo Reps 2027: Ikakke Bassey wins Labour Party ticket

…pledges results-driven representation in acceptance speech

By Ime Silas

Ikakke Bassey, the Labour Party candidate for the Uyo/Uruan /Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, has formally accepted his nomination ahead of the 2027 general election, promising a campaign built on “ideas, competence, integrity, and a commitment to service.”

Speaking in an acceptance speech released to party faithful and residents on Saturday, Bassey described the nomination as both a personal honor and a collective mandate from constituents yearning for accountable leadership.

“My Party compatriots and dear people of Uyo Federal Constituency,” he began.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to accept the nomination of the Labour Party as its candidate for the House of Representatives 2027. I thank God Almighty, the leadership and members of our great party, and every delegate and supporter who placed their confidence in me. This victory is not mine alone; it belongs to every citizen who believes that our constituency deserves purposeful, accountable, and results-driven representation.”

The declaration sets the tone for what political observers expect to be a competitive race for the Uyo Federal Constituency seat, which covers Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, and Nsit Ibom Local Government Areas. Bassey, who will contest under the Labour Party banner, enters the 2027 cycle with a message centered on economic opportunity and practical governance.

Acknowledging the daily struggles of residents, Bassey painted a picture of a constituency rich in human capital but burdened by economic challenges. He said the gap between the people’s resilience and their living conditions is what motivated him to run.

“Across our constituency, our people are hardworking and resilient, yet many families continue to struggle with unemployment, limited opportunities, and economic hardship. I am offering myself for service because I believe representation must go beyond politics—it must create opportunities, solve problems, and improve lives. My vision is anchored on four pillars: Jobs, Skills, Enterprise, and Results. Together, we can unlock the potential of our people and build a more prosperous future for all.”

The “four pillars” framework will form the core of his campaign platform, according to aides close to the candidate. While details of specific policies are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, the emphasis on “Jobs, Skills, Enterprise, and Results” signals a focus on youth employment, technical and vocational training, support for small businesses, and measurable legislative performance. That approach mirrors a growing voter demand across Akwa Ibom State for representatives who can demonstrate tangible impact beyond election-season promises.

Political analysts note that Labour Party has been steadily building structures in the South-South since the 2023 elections, and Uyo Federal Constituency is viewed as a key battleground due to its urban population, large student community, and active SME sector.

Bassey’s nomination, according political pundits, increases the hopes of millions of dissatisfied constituents seeking removal of the incumbent with a view to reshaping federal representation for the area.

In his speech, Bassey extended an open invitation to voters across party lines, framing the 2027 contest as a movement rather than a partisan fight. He stressed unity and issue-based campaigning as the path to meaningful change.

“As we begin this journey toward the general election, I invite every resident of Uyo Federal Constituency, regardless of political affiliation, to join this movement for positive change. This campaign will be driven by ideas, competence, integrity, and a commitment to service. Let us work together to build a constituency where our youths have opportunities, our businesses thrive, and our people can see and feel the impact of effective representation.”

The call for cross-party collaboration may resonate in Uyo, where voters have increasingly prioritized performance and accessibility over party loyalty in recent elections. Community leaders and youth groups in the constituency have repeatedly called for lawmakers who maintain regular contact with constituents and prioritize constituency projects that address unemployment and infrastructure gaps.

Closing his remarks, Bassey returned to themes of humility and duty, pledging unwavering commitment to the mandate if elected. He also offered prayers for his party, his constituency, the state, and the nation.

“Thank you for your trust. I accept this nomination with humility, gratitude, and an unwavering commitment to serve.”

“May God bless Labour Party, Uyo Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Bassey’s emergence comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is expected to release the official timetable for party primaries and candidate submissions later this year. For now, Labour Party’s candidate has laid down his opening marker: a representation model measured not by political rhetoric, but by “Results.”

With campaign activities anticipated to ramp up in the coming months, all eyes will be on how Bassey translates the “Jobs, Skills, Enterprise, and Results” vision into concrete policy proposals that address Uyo Federal Constituency’s most pressing needs.
