WCQ: Hope rises as Nigeria beat Rwanda in Uyo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a 1:0 victory over Rwanda at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The first half saw Nigeria control possession but struggle to create clear chances against a compact Rwanda setup.

The breakthrough arrived in the 51st minute when Ola Aina’s run on the flank produced a chance; Tolu Arokodare’s follow-up struck the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line. Nigeria will next face South Africa on Tuesday in the same World Cup qualifiers.

Rwanda responded with increasing urgency, testing Nigeria’s concentration. Fiacre Ntwari had earlier denied Arokodare, and later the visitors forced several threatening moments, but they could not convert pressure into a goal. Calvin Bassey cleared off the line to preserve the lead.

A defensive change brought on William Troost-Ekong to organize the backline. His presence helped Nigeria repel late set-piece threats and manage the closing minutes.

The stadium grew louder as the minutes ticked away, every clearance and tackle cheered with intensity. Rwanda pressed, Nigeria resisted, and the ball swung from one half to the other in a battle of nerves.

When the referee finally blew for full time, the roar was deafening. Players embraced, fans waved flags, and chants rolled across the stands. It was not just a narrow win—it was a night of relief and joy in Uyo, with eyes already turning to Tuesday’s clash with South Africa.
